General Motors has issued safety recall N262551720 affecting approximately 271,770 Chevrolet Malibu vehicles due to a defect involving the rearview camera system. The recall affects model‑year 2023‑2025 Chevrolet Malibu sedans. NHTSA also released its owner report (Report # 26V212). The NHTSA Report can be referenced here.

According to recall reports, the rearview camera in affected vehicles may display a blank or distorted image while reversing, reducing rear visibility and increasing the risk of a crash. Rearview cameras are federally required safety features designed to prevent back‑over accidents, particularly involving pedestrians or obstacles behind the vehicle.

Nature of the Defect

According to recall reports, the issue involves:

  • Rearview camera malfunction
  • Blank or distorted image when reversing
  • Water intrusion into camera housing
  • Increased risk of backup collision

General Motors dealers will:

  • Replace the rearview camera
  • Install updated components
  • Verify system functionality

Dealer notifications began in early April, with owner notification letters expected to begin May 18, 2026.

Why This Recall Matters

Recalls can be an indication that an underlying issue exists with the vehicle and the manufacturer has knowledge of that defect.  Under the California Lemon Law, if the manufacturer cannot repair your vehicle under warranty after repeated attempts, you may be entitled to compensation. You can read MMO Law’s post pertaining to automotive recalls by clicking here.
