Hyundai has issued a safety recall affecting more than 46,000 2026 Hyundai Palisade and Palisade Hybrid SUVs due to a potential issue involving the seat belt status indicator. The defect may cause the seat belt warning system to malfunction, which could prevent drivers from knowing when occupants are not properly restrained. Owners can call Hyundai at 855-371-9460 (Reference Recall #297) or the NHTSA hotline at 888-327-4236 and (Reference NHTSA Recall # 26V169.)

Seat belt reminder systems are designed to alert drivers when passengers are not wearing seat belts. When these systems fail, occupants may unknowingly travel without proper restraint, increasing the risk of injury in the event of a crash. Because seat belts are a primary safety feature, defects involving seat belt warning systems are taken seriously by regulators and manufacturers.

Reports indicate that affected vehicles may display incorrect seat belt warning information. This could result in drivers believing passengers are properly restrained when they are not. Improper seat belt use significantly increases the risk of injury during collisions, particularly in high-speed accidents.

Manufacturer’s Remedy

Hyundai dealers will inspect and repair the seat belt indicator system as necessary. Repairs will be performed free of charge. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed following dealer notification.

Recalls can be an indication that an underlying issue exists with the vehicle and the manufacturer has knowledge of that defect.  Under the California Lemon Law, if the manufacturer cannot repair your vehicle under warranty after repeated attempts, you may be entitled to compensation. You can read MMO Law’s post pertaining to automotive recalls by clicking here.
