Last year, Audi and its parent company Volkswagen announced a significant recall affecting thousands of SUV’s. This recall is due to damaged engine connecting rod bearings, which could lead to engine failure and potential safety hazards. The affected vehicles include certain model-year Audi Q5 Sportbacks, as well as Volkswagen Atlas and Atlas Cross Sport SUVs. In this blog post, we’ll delve into the details of this recall, its potential consequences, and the steps being taken to address the issue.

Recall Details

The recall encompasses a total of 74,000 vehicles, comprising various models and production years. Specifically, the affected SUVs include some of the following:

  • 2021-2023 Audi Q5 SUV vehicles
  • 2021-2023 Audi Q6 Sportback vehicles
  • 2022-2023 Volkswagen Atlas SUV vehicles
  • 2022-2023 Volkswagen Atlas Cross Sport vehicles

The recall has been initiated due to deviations in the mechanical production process of the connecting rods, which has resulted in an increased occurrence of particles in the engine oil circuit. This issue could lead to the wear and tear of the connecting rod bearings, potentially causing engine failure. In the worst-case scenario, the failure of the engine could result in an oil leak, posing a fire risk and increasing the likelihood of a crash.

To identify the recall, it is referenced as either NHTSA Recall No. 22V-753 or Volkswagen’s recall 13i4.

Safety Concerns

The primary safety concerns arising from this recall are twofold: engine failure leading to a stall and power loss while driving, and the potential for an oil leak that could result in a fire. Moreover, the possibility of an oil leak introduces the potential for a fire, posing further dangers to both occupants of the vehicle and those in the vicinity.

Response and Solution

Notifications to owners of the affected vehicles will begin on December 6th, outlining the recall and the necessary steps to take. If you own one of the mentioned Audi Q5 Sportbacks or Volkswagen SUVs, it’s crucial to follow the instructions provided by the manufacturers to ensure your vehicle’s safety.

Conclusion

Recalls can be an indication that an underlying issue exists with the vehicle and the manufacturer has knowledge of that defect.  Under the California Lemon Law, if the manufacturer cannot repair your vehicle under warranty after repeated attempts, you may be entitled to compensation. You can read MMO Law’s post pertaining to automotive recalls by clicking here.
