Subaru has issued a recall affecting over 35,000 cars of its Subaru Crosstrek SUV and Subaru Impreza hatchback models. Subaru’s last major recall was in December 2022. The current recall targets model-year 2024 vehicles and focuses on a specific concern related to the instrument panel harness. Let’s delve into the details of this situation and understand what steps Subaru is taking:

The Problem: Potential Short Circuit and Safety Implications

The recall revolves around a vital component of the vehicles – the instrument panel harness. This harness is responsible for transmitting electrical signals and power to various parts of the car’s instrumentation and controls. In certain units, the harness may lack sufficient clearance around it, allowing the possibility of contact with the steering beam bracket. Should this contact occur, it could lead to damage to the wire insulation of the harness, resulting in a potentially hazardous short circuit.

The implications of such a short circuit are important. If the vehicle experiences a short circuit while being driven, there is a real risk of the vehicle losing power. This sudden loss of power could lead to a loss of control, ultimately increasing the likelihood of an accident. Subaru’s proactive approach to addressing this issue underscores their commitment to maintaining the safety and reliability of their vehicles on the road.

The Recall: Inspection, Additional Clamps, and Protective Measures

Subaru is authorizing dealerships to conduct inspections of the affected vehicles. If any damage or potential contact between the harness and steering beam bracket is identified, dealers will potentially take action. This may involve installing an additional clamp on the steering beam bracket to ensure proper clearance and prevent any future contact. For vehicles that have already experienced damage due to contact, dealerships will implement protective measures.

Communication and Support for Vehicle Owners

Vehicle owners who are affected by this recall will be notified by the automaker, with notices scheduled to be sent out on October 3rd. The number of potentially affected new 2024 Crosstrek vehicles is 29,561. The number of potentially affected 2024 Impreza vehicles is 5,796.  To identify the recall, it is referenced as Subaru’s recall WRL-23.

Conclusion

Recalls can be an indication that an underlying issue exists with the vehicle and the manufacturer has knowledge of that defect.  Under the California Lemon Law, if the manufacturer cannot repair your vehicle under warranty after repeated attempts, you may be entitled to compensation. You can read MMO Law’s post pertaining to automotive recalls by clicking here.
