Jeep parent company Stellantis has issued a major recall affecting more than 320,000 Grand Cherokee and Wrangler 4xe plug-in hybrid SUVs due to a high-voltage battery defect that can cause the vehicles to catch fire. The recall covers 2020–2025 Jeep Wrangler 4xe and 2022–2026 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe models. Stellantis determined that some battery packs contain cells with separator damage, which can create dangerous internal reactions leading to a vehicle fire—whether parked, charging, or driving.

Ongoing Investigation and Fire Reports

Stellantis opened its latest investigation after multiple Jeep 4xe fires occurred outside the scope of prior recalls from 2023 and 2024. Engineers found that even vehicles repaired under earlier recall campaigns could still experience the same defect because the previous software remedy failed to detect certain battery abnormalities. As of October 13, 2025, Stellantis reported 10 battery fires, 19 customer assistance cases, and one injury linked to this ongoing issue.

Safety Warnings and Owner Guidance

Until a fix is available, Jeep owners should park outside and away from structures and avoid charging their vehicles. Stellantis plans to mail interim recall notices to owners beginning December 2, 2025, followed by a second notice once repairs are ready. Vehicles that were previously recalled under campaigns 95B (NHTSA ID 24V-720) must also undergo the new remedy. Owners seeking more information can contact customer service and reference recall number 68C.

Broader Implications for Plug-In Hybrid Safety

Recalls can be an indication that an underlying issue exists with the vehicle and the manufacturer has knowledge of that defect.  Under the California Lemon Law, if the manufacturer cannot repair your vehicle under warranty after repeated attempts, you may be entitled to compensation. You can read MMO Law’s post pertaining to automotive recalls by clicking here.
