Rivian Automotive, LLC (Rivian) is recalling some of its 2022-2023 R1S vehicles. Pursuant to NHTSA Campaign Number: 23V233000, Rivian has identified an issue with its reverse light beam. The recall is identified internally by Rivian as Recall FSAM-1216. Rivian issued the recall because of worries that the reverse light beams may not be visible from certain angles. The recall applies to over 5000 R1S vehicles. Moreover, this issue is potentially a violation of the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard Number 108. In the Rivian recall itself, the authors admit the reverse light issue may contribute to an increased risk of collision.
David Hakimi, owner of Los Angeles headquartered Alcon Lighting, identifies the difficulties manufacturers often encounter in executing lighting design. Alcon Lighting is a manufacturer and distributor of LED lighting designed for commercial lighting applications. According to Hakimi, “[a]s a general principal, it is so important for manufacturers to get the optic design right for lights. While LED’s afford designers highly variable beam angles, there is risk of improperly accounting for the optics of a design at the expense of visibility.”
Recalls can be an indication that an underlying issue exists with the vehicle and the manufacturer has knowledge of that defect. Under the California Lemon Law, if the manufacturer cannot repair your vehicle under warranty after repeated attempts, you may be entitled to compensation.
