Toyota has issued a recall affecting approximately 74,000 Corolla Cross Hybrid SUVs due to a defect involving the pedestrian warning sound system. The warning sound may be quieter than intended when the vehicle is in reverse, increasing the risk of a crash involving pedestrians. Hybrid and electric vehicles rely on pedestrian warning sounds because they operate more quietly than traditional gasoline-powered vehicles. These sounds help alert pedestrians, cyclists, and others that a vehicle is nearby, particularly in parking lots or residential areas. If the sound is too quiet, pedestrians may not realize a vehicle is reversing, increasing the risk of injury. Reduced warning sound volume could increase the risk of accidents involving pedestrians.
Consumers should look out for notification letters shortly. Toyota intends to notify customers by late-May 2026.
Affected Vehicles
The recall reportedly affects:
- 2023 Toyota Corolla Cross Hybrid
- 2024 Toyota Corolla Cross Hybrid
- 2025 Toyota Corolla Cross Hybrid
