MMO Law, A.P.C.

Auto recalls are a common occurrence in the automotive industry. From minor issues to major safety concerns, automakers recall millions of vehicles every year. While some recalls are forgotten over time, others are remembered for their massive scale and impact on the industry.

On that note, car news website Jalopnik recently published a list of the largest automotive recalls to date.  The list comprised two Volkswagen (VW) recalls, two Toyota recalls, three Ford recalls, and four General Motors (GM) recalls. The list of those recalls are as follows:

  • 3.7 Million Vehicles – Volkswagen’s 1972 Windshield Wiper Recall
  • 3.7 Million Vehicles – GM’s 1973 Underbody Shields Recall
  • 4.3 Million Vehicles – Ford’s 1972 Seatbelt Recall
  • 6 Million Vehicles – GM’s 1981 Control Arm Recall
  • 6.7 Million Vehicles – GM’s 1971 Engine Mount Recall
  • 8.7 Million Vehicles – Ford 1996 Ignition Switch Recall
  • 11 Million Vehicles – Volkswagen’s 2016 Dieselgate Recall
  • 14 Million Vehicles – Toyota’s Window Switches Recalls
  • 14.9 Million Vehicles – Ford’s Cruise Control Recalls
  • 20.5 Million Vehicles – Toyota’s 2009 Unintended Acceleration Recalls
  • 30 Million Vehicles – GM’s 2014 Ignition Switch Recall

Unsurprisingly, many of these recalls coincide with the advent  of the Song-Beverly Consumer Warranty act (the California Lemon Law) and the formation of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration in 1970.  Moreover, history seems to be repeating itself as this year alone MMO Law has already written about GM’s recent lighting recall, GM’s Cadillac XT5 and GMC Acadia recall relating to a dangerous loss of power, GM’s Chevy Malibu framing recall, the Ford Bronco steering recall, and the VW Atlas airbag recall.

Recalls can be an indication that an underlying issue exists with the vehicle and the manufacturer has knowledge of that defect.
